| Jason's Birthday Party: Over-sized Food Edition! |
[Aug. 13th, 2010|10:41 pm]
|
The time has come for Jason's 29th birthday party! Holy shit I'm old!
The "theme", if one can call it that, is over-sized food. As per my usual birthday tradition, I will be getting at least one Mrs. Fields Giant Cookie Cake. To go along with that, I have decided to get a "Giant Pretzel Sandwich" from Beyond Bread, as described below:
"Beyond Bread’s famous Pretzel stuffed with the finest and freshest ingredients, and cut into 25 piece
Veggie: Cream Cheese, roasted red peppers, lettuce, red onion, sprouts, tomato. Sides of ranch dressing, Dijon & honey mustard are provided"
Doesn't that sound fantastic? You know it does. Mmm.
Now obviously, with all of this giant food involved, I definitely need to know if you plan to come and if you plan to eat and WHAT you plan to eat (pretzel, cookie cake, or both), so I know about how much food to order. If I hadn't heard from you by August 25th, I'm going to assume you don't want anything and you will be forced to watch the rest of us consume the deliciousness that COULD HAVE BEEN YOURS, damnit.
Please do not bring presents, but if you want to bring a couple of bucks to help with the food, that would be awesome.
The party begins at 7:30 PM on Friday, August 27th, at my place.
Hope you all can make it!
PS -
I am tentatively planning a hiking trip up on Mt. Lemmon for the Saturday after the party, probably sometime in the late morning or early afternoon. I don't know much about the hiking up there, and there may be a separate invite once I get more solid plans, but I'm mentioning it now in case I never get around to it. |

| New Year's Eve Party 2009 Edition XP SP3 |
[Dec. 17th, 2009|09:27 am]
|
It's time for our yearly New Year's Eve party - but with a twist!
The theme this year is "time travel" - or, if you prefer, think it of as an era-themed party of your choice. Come dressed as someone from the 80's...90's...or the 1920's...or the 2220's. Or an alternate reality version of the 1980's. Or a week in the future. Anything you want! Be creative. Or don't.
We will have appetizer-y food and drinks, but please feel free to bring anything you want! Except beer. We have enough beer. Please stop bringing beer to our house. Please?

| Thoughts on Wii Fit's weigh-in system and positive/negative reinforcement |
[Oct. 8th, 2009|01:36 pm]
|
| [ | Current Mood |
| | full | ] | I wrote this little mini-rant as part of a discussion on Wii Fit and positive/negative feedback. Just thought I might share it with everyone:
The problem isn't necessary negative reinforcement alone, but the fact that it's too easy to receive that negative reinforcement when you don't deserve it.
I've been using Wii Fit to weigh-in daily now for almost 10 months. I've lost almost 70 pounds in that time, but I still agree that Wii Fit is simply too quick to provide negative reinforcement.
For instance, if you gain over a pound, it always demands you enter a reason. This shows a fundamental misunderstanding for how human weight works. My weight can easily fluctuate 2-3 pounds in a day, and even if I weigh in two days in a row at the exact same time every day, I might have gained more than a pound. The human body is fickle like that. What matters far more is your overall trend - are you gaining or losing? And that's where Wii Fit tends to fail - it doesn't monitor long-term trends, only day-to-day weight and whether or not you've made your goal(s).
It's not really a BAD tool, but it's not nearly AS MUCH as it could be. It has the potential to be a truly powerful analysis took that monitors your long-term weight fluctuations and gives you positive or negative feedback based on THAT, rather than feedback based on solely on day-to-day values and your goals. For instance, if I randomly drop 2 pounds, it might claim I'll "make my goal at that pace", even though I obviously WON'T if you look at the long-term rate I am losing. The feedback would be far, far more useful if it said positive things at first like "You have gained a pound, but don't worry unless this trend continues for another couple of weeks. Keep it up!", and then EVENTUALLY triggered negative feedback if you continued to gain weight over the course of a week or two with no signs you were trying to improve.
As a very-accurate scale and graphing software, Wii Fit is quite useful, but I just don't understand why Nintendo balked at making the software as powerful as it truly could, and should, be. |

| Batman Back-to-Back Blu-Ray Batathon |
[Sep. 28th, 2009|08:34 am]
|
Since I have recently acquired both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight on Blu-Ray, it seems only appropriate we watch both of them back-to-back!
The films starts Saturday at 7 PM. I will be leaving around 6 or 6:15 to acquire Brooklyn Pizza for anyone who wants it. If you want pizza, let me know prior to Saturday or there won't be any for you!
Also, if you want soda, bring your own since we have none :)

| Jason's Exciting Birthday Adventure! |
[Aug. 17th, 2009|10:33 am]
|
As many of you have heard, I thought it'd be fun to do something a little different for my birthday this year.
The plan is to take a daytrip up to Summerhaven to escape the heat and do some exploring/geocaching, both on the way up Mount Lemmon and at Summerhaven itself. I can't guarantee how much data or GPS reception my phone will get on the way up, so if anyone has any stand-alone GPS units, please bring them along!
We are going to rendezvous at McDonald Park at 11 AM, which is close to where Catalina Highway becomes Mt. Lemmon Highway:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Tucson+AZ+Mcdonald+Park&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=55.543096,114.169922&ie=UTF8&ll=32.28218,-110.787206&spn=0.014658,0.027874&z=16&iwloc=B
This is so we have a place to meet that's closer to the destination, as well as a place where people can leave their cars so we can carpool and take as few vehicles as possible. I was told this is where bikers often leave their cars before going up, so it's probably the best location for this sort of thing. I know 11 AM is a little early for some of you lazy people, but I want to make sure we have time to go up and spend some time up there before any monsoon storms make a visit.
We will probably need at least 4 drivers, depending on how many people show up. I plan to have at least 4-6 walkie talkies, one for each car, just so we can quickly communicate when needed on the way up.

| John Hughes Marathon! |
[Aug. 10th, 2009|10:40 am]
|
We are either honoring the memory of John Hughes, or using his unfortunate passing as an excuse to watch 80's movies and eat pizza. Either way, come join us for a John Hughes marathon!
Date: Sunday, August 16, 2009 Time: 12:00pm - 9:00pm Location: Jason, Katharine, and Jamie's House Street: 914 W. Clear River St.
Feel free to come for all or some of it, or even to come for a movie, leave, and return for another. Though each movie is less than 2 hours, we're scheduling 2 hours for each, just to be on the safe side. The tentative schedule is as follows:
12-2: Sixteen Candles 2-4: Weird Science 4-6: The Breakfast Club 6-7: INTERMISSION - Retrieval and consumption of Brooklyn Pizza (http://www.brooklynpizzacompany.com/) 7-9: Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Give me a call or shoot me a text on the day-of if you want to know if we're still on schedule or if you want to put in an order for pizza. I will only take pizza orders from people who are there around 5:30 or contact me personally! We will probably also have a bit of snack food during the movies, but I have no idea what form it will take.
Hope you all will join us! |

managed to capture three stray, collar-less dog, but one escaped his make-shift collar/leash. More on this as the situation develops. about 2 hours ago from TweetDeck
figured out that the third dog got back into his house and closed the slightly-ajar door behind him. Left a note for the owners. about 1 hour ago from TweetDeck
has returned the dogs to their owner (found by looking up the house address on Google). A happy end to an exciting morning. about 1 hour ago from TweetDeck
